NOTE: The first issue of SPORTMOM E-votionals each month is dedicated to our word for the year - REACH!

It has been nearly 50 years since I walked down the aisle with my high school diploma in hand and the 50th year since I entered the halls of higher education.

Reaching back into my memories, I find some that I wish weren’t there, some that I barely remember, and some that bring delight to my soul.  But all have a purpose if I pause to fully consider them.

                   RECAPTURING MOMENTS IS IMPOSSIBLE –
                           REALIZING THEIR VALUE IS VITAL

Coach often recounts certain games either as a player or as a coach.  Replaying them in his mind, he rattles them off like a play-by-play announcer. Rarely do these memories include a bump, scratch, elbow in the eye/nose, or bad refereeing.  Rather, they are filled with the essence of awesome game-making moves.

"Forget the times of your distress, but never forget what they taught you."
Herbert Gasser, Physiologist and 1944 Nobel Prize winner.

The process of REACHING BACK has been a vital part of forming who my husband is today…a 50-year veteran basketball coach who loves Jesus!

REACHING BACK into the past was also a hallmark of the man after God’s own heart, David.  He was the boy with the slingshot who killed the giant, the King of Israel, the murderer, the forgiven and forgiver, and the great Psalmist.  Often he recalls who he is and prays for insight to live it out…

“You made me and formed me with your hands. Give me understanding so I can learn your commands.”
Psalm 119:73  NCV

Isaiah, the great prophet of God, found himself REACHING BACK to what he had learned about the great and living God who is forming us…

“And yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand.”
Isaiah 64:8  NLT

REACHING BACK is a vital part of being formed into the image of our God, by our God.

PRAYER:  Unafraid, Lord, I reach back to gather those things that move me toward You.  Leaving all the rest behind, I once again put myself in your hands to mould and make me into your image. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Blessings now…as you move ahead in Christ by REACHING BACK to see His purpose.
