As I observe the sport world, this truth becomes more and more obvious. Team members assist one another both on and off the courts and fields of athletics. Whether it is a ride home from practice or offering a hand up to a fallen teammate during game play, offering a hand of assistance is part of relationship.
"Ask not what your teammates can do for you. Ask what you can do for your
teammates." Magic Johnson
But it is when players give a hand up to a fallen competitor that always warms my heart. During a fiercely fought moment with one being thrown or pushed down, the reaching out by an opposing team member to help them up seems to say, “It’s just a game!”
The lifting up of those around us is an opportunity we all have. It can be as simple as a quick “you look nice today” or by noticing something especially good which seems to have been unnoticed by the one it was done for and offering a heart-felt “I noticed, thank you”.
SMALL THINGS ARE SIGNIFICANT
One cold winter evening our daughter came into the family room wrapped in a warm blanket. Snuggling up on the sofa to enjoy a T.V. program (no videos then), she noticed that her sister was cold too. Handing the warmed-up blanket to her sister, she scampered out of the room returning with another cozy blanket. As I observed this thoughtful action, I knew it was time to lift her up. With a big smile I thanked her for the gesture of kindness she had given to her sister. At that point the sister who received the blanket chimed in with a “thank you” too. The one who offered the blanket was pleased when her sister said “thank you” but she beamed when she realized someone had noticed her taking care of her sister.
“There is no better exercise for strengthening the heart than reaching down and LIFTING UP another.” Anonymous
God beams when He sees us LIFTING UP one another. Whether it is offerd as a word of encouragement, a heart-felt thank you on behalf of another, or a physical assist of some kind,
being there for another is certainly an extension of His hand and heart.
Blessings…as you find opportunities to lift up someone today in the name of Jesus.
