Today I am sharing a letter that Coach received after his State ranked team from a Christian High School played a struggling team from a public school...it is quintessential BEHIND THE BENCH.
Hi Coach,
I am a parent (and) I want to apologize for my behavior during the basketball game and after the game. First ... our kids were really excited to play your team although they knew there was not a realistic chance for them to win. They very much admire the boys on your team because of their skill
level and attitude as a whole.
Very early in the game, my attitude turned negative. I was blown away by the skills your boys have and embarrassed for our team. Anyway, I cornered a coach (from your school) after the game and told him I felt as Christians your team was too prideful and they needed to learn some humility. He was very respectful.
But I was wrong, I was the one who was a prideful jerk. I have to tell you, on the way home my boy was so excited but I kept trying to be negative, My husband finally said, "Knock it off. Those boys were playing well and fair. I don't want that team to go easy on us." My boy agreed. Then to nail it home, I heard the other mothers talking positively about how excited their boys were to play your team. One mom said her boy wanted to have his picture taken with the team. Another mom said their boys were amazed at how high they could jump. Another boy said it was an honor.
So please forgive me for my poor Sportsmanship. I will enjoy watching the next game and this time it will be fun to watch.
