Usually when I think of refreshing I think of rain . . . right now I am in sunny Florida visiting my sister for a week and the sun is definitely refreshing. Since Oregon can get soggily dreary during this time of year, this is a wonderful diversion for which I am grateful. While coach launches his 2010-11 basketball season, I am in the warm sun and balmy breezes of Vero Beach.
You wanna take a walk with me? Okay - put on your flip-flops, take off your jacket or hoodie, slip into something shorter and looser, don't forget the sunscreen and straw hat - let's go. We're on a long boardwalk by a white-sand beach and we stop for a rest at one of the many benches along the way that overlook the Atlantic . The sun is rising and the sky is bright blue. We take the next set of stairs down to the sand dotted with shells...and head to the lapping wavelets that kiss our toes. In the distance the beach line softly curves while palm trees waft in the breeze along it's edge. We pause to look out to the sea where randomly spotted fishing boats are anchored and and a mega-oceanliner can be seen in the far distance heading to southern island resorts.
The town awakes slowly as most southern towns do. The quiet remains undisturbed well beyond the sun's rising. The sand is warm and soft beneath our feet, not yet hot from hours of sun-drenched baking, We head south for a bit and then back to the boardwalk to jog through the communities on this intracoastal island. Mostly single-level homes with thick folliage surrounding them, they are nestled together joined only by the electric lines. The Christmas decorations are on nearly every one - it must be spectacular at night! We round the corner to the quaint down-town and head for The Lemon Tree to finish our walk with a strawberry-mango smoothie on the warm and sunny patio . . . awe, yes - the refreshing sun!
