After leaving home for college my father wrote me a letter. In it he revealed his trust in me with these words, “I know life will bring difficult situations, but you have always done what is right after you think about it for awhile.” The underlined portion of his statement burned deep into my soul and has reminded me over and over again to CHOOSE WISDOM not reaction.
The sport world is based on a fine balance between reaction and wisdom. The right action in a timely moment during fast-moving competition is key to achieving a goal. When beautifully bred and well-trained horses race toward the finish line, the timely and wise moves of the Jockey make the difference between winning by a nose or losing by one.
There is an account found in I Samuel 24 that beautifully illustrates the CHOOSE WISDOM concept. David was being chased by King Saul but there came a timely moment when David had the opportunity kill him. Although David’s peers encouraged him to do it, David simply and secretly cut off a piece of Saul’s robe to prove he had the opportunity. Then, as Saul was leaving, David mercifully called out to him. Showing him the piece of his garment, David bowed before Saul in submission saying, “I could not harm you because you are the Lord’s anointed.” David’s God-like response was to CHOOSE WISDOM which impacted his whole future.
When those around us seek to influence us into earthly responses, we can opt for a heavenly response - Godly wisdom enabling us to express our true heart just as David did. Instead of taking opportunities to retaliate, we can choose to access the wisdom God offers to us…
“…the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” James 3:17 NIV
