Challenges face us daily and with them come the decision whether to take them on or run in the other direction. Depending on how comfortable we are with the situation, we will either go for it or decline...accept it or reject it.
When a team is asked to participate in a high-stakes tournament, the coach can either ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE or decide against it. This decision will be made after some serious consideration of the up side and down side of a commitment like this. Playing against successful teams can mean losing the game as well as losing face. Winning would mean status and otherwise elusive opportunities. The best decision must be made by the coach for the team as a whole.
“How you respond to the challenge…will determine what you become after the game, whether you are a winner or a loser.” Lou Holtz, football player, coach, and analyst
Here’s a fascinating story about a life-impacting challenge…
Joe, from a well-known and respected family, had a very serious decision to make. No matter what route he chose it would bring questions, chatter and the risk of winning big or losing face.
There was a very special gal that Joe was engaged to marry and who he cared for very much. The problem was that she had become pregnant and it was not his child. As his plans to marry the love of his life went into a tail-spin, he had an important decision to make: to participate or not.
With an over-riding influence in the form of a dream, Joe chose to ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE. He took his beloved, as his wife and cared for her as if the child was his own taking on the fact that it wasn’t his. One good thing was that he knew who the father of this child, it was God…and Joe won big!
Joe’s willingness to put his life aside for the good of all mankind gave us Christmas for our Savior was born just as the angel in his dream had said!
“[Mary] will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Mathew 1:21
PRAYER: Just as Joseph did, I accept the challenge believing that Jesus is your only Son whose life and death offer me eternal life. Thank you for Joseph’s willingness to follow through so you could come to us through the manger. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
JESUS CAME TO MAKE AN OFFER…IT’S UP TO US TO ACCEPT IT!
