On the fields and courts of sports the goal is always to make EVERY EFFORT. The coach is present to guide and direct the players toward this goal. A team that performs at the top of its skills and abilities is a winner no matter what the scoreboard says.
God’s Word encourages us to try really hard and to stretch ourselves…
“…make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.” 2 Peter 1:5-7 NIV
“Growing spiritually is a lifelong process—not a one-time event.” Cindy Hess Kasper
As followers of Christ, our effectiveness is not dependent on the scoreboard of conversions but on how we live out the game of life. We are promised that the Holy Spirit is there to enable us as we make EVERY EFFORT to “add to”. The result?
“…if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ…you will never stumble and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:8, 10, 11 NIV
To make every effort is the ultimate sacrifice and greatest achievement.
