GETTING THERE

3/1/2011

When the children were young our family took 2-3 day road trips to visit relatives. We dreamed about making memories with them.  Although it took many hours to get there,  we always reminded one another that our "vacation" started when we got in the car to leave - not when we arrived at the pre-determined  destination.  Getting there was part of the vacation!

It has been said, "When we go so fast to get somewhere - we miss the fun of getting there!"

The same is true for sport teams.  It's in the process of getting there that develops deep relationships and finely-tuned maneuvers that bring their dreams to reality.  The practices, the pre-season scrimmages and games, tough league or club competition and the time invested to do these things that make up the GETTING THERE journey.

And where is "there"?  "There" is arriving at a pre-determined place.  For a sport team it is State or Club Championship games.  For our family it was being with loved ones. Whatever the destination the journey will surely bring down times and up times - awesome wins and heart-breaking losses. But when we arrive - the GETTING THERE is worth the effort.  It is the journey that brings deep and lasting meaning to life on our trek toward fulfilled dreams.

LIFE IS MADE OF DREAMS DREAMED AND CHOICES MADE TO GET THERE.

The writer of the poem below titled SLOW DANCE made a choice to focus on the best things of life.  While facing a sure destination (an early death due to cancer) this teenager dreamed of encouraging us with these words.

Slow Dance

Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?

Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.

Time is short.
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day
On the fly?

When you ask 'How are you?'
Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done -  Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores Running through  your head?

You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?

And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die

Cause you never had time
To call and say,'Hi'

You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.

Time is short.
The music won't last..

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift...thrown away.

Life is not a race.
Do take it slower -   Hear the music
Before the song is over.

Jesus came to give us an eternal dream and show us how to get there. His words breathe meaning into our dreams and lead us to God's ordained purpose for each life point.

"I have come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
John 10:10

Take a slow dance in your GETTING THERE today and experience the abundant life our Savior came to give us.  The journey will be amazing - the destination eternal.

Blessings...as you enjoy the GETTING THERE.
